Jurassic Park Final Assessment
Jurassic Park Final Assessment Options (You will choose ONLY ONE)
There are many themes in the
book Jurassic Park. Below is an example of one theme and a
project that would go along with that theme. Use the example below or come up
with your own theme that shows up throughout the book.
Control:
A major theme of Jurassic
Park is “control” - mankind trying to control nature, which is
uncontrollable. Create a poster showing
multiple instances of when things got out of control due to nature finding a
way to surpass man’s attempt at controlling it.
This should be done by hand with full written explanations near the
images or on the back. The written
explanations should be multiple sentences and completely explain how the
scenario fits in with this particular theme, what led up to it, and what the
consequence was. These explanations
should explain how nature overcame man in the story. Minimum 4 examples
Science:
The author, Michael Crichton
is a trained doctor; because of this most of his books deal with science. It is
difficult to read 10 pages in this book and not run into scientific terms,
hypotheses, or procedures. If you are
more of a science person, this project might be for you. Whether it is replicating DNA, comparing
dinosaurs to birds, or a host of technological advancements, science is
everywhere. For this project you will:
-Locate 3 different sections
of the book where the author writes about something having to do with life
science
-Spend some time doing
research on each of the three different ideas
-Create something that show
the result of the research you’ve done – this is INTENTIALLY VAGUE, I want you
to come up with something on your own.
This could be writing a research paper, a poster with diagrams, pictures
and explanations, a presentation for the class, a video blog, whatever. Just MAKE SURE you are tying the information
you find on your own in with the book and how it shows up in the book.
Vocabulary Story:
We’ve been keeping track of
vocabulary throughout the story. We’ve
written our own definitions and sentences using new words and I provided you
with my own list of important vocabulary words.
What you are to do is this: Write
your own story using at least 20 of these new/interesting words. This story should follow the idea of Jurassic Park. It should be a science-fiction story based in
our reality. That means something that is plausible (believable) given the
right set up circumstances. So, not like
Star Wars or something fantastical and far-fetched. It should be a story that
takes place in modern times but perhaps with a bit of a twist given a
hypothetical occurrence. I don’t want to
be too specific, because I want you to have the freedom to write what you
want. This will be graded like any paper
throughout the year. Conventions, originality,
sentence structures, AND UNDERLINE
YOUR 20 VOCABULARY WORDS!

3 Branches of Gov't Project
Individual
Visual Project—Group Creative Project:
Directions:
- Each
group member is responsible for contributing to a visual aid that contains
all of the information from his or her branch notes in a creative manner.
- Visual
aid should be part of a larger group creative project—this is to be decided
upon as a team and must all tie together. Be creative!
- REQUIRED:
Detailed information and hand-crafted visual images (no computer generated
or printed photos)
In your group of three, you
will design and create a display that shows how the United States government
works. This should include the three
branches of the government, who/what is included in that branch, their responsibilities,
and the power they have to check and balance the power of the other branches.
Format - A group may decide
to get a giant piece of butcher paper and find a creative way to represent
their branches of government, or create a graphic novel with drawings and
descriptions. They could also create a sculpture, flow charts, dioramas,
collages, etc. Be creative.

Declaration / War Project DUE FRIDAY JANUARY 27TH
In Order to show your understanding of the material we've gone over in class for the last couple weeks, you'll create a TWO-SIDED POSTER.
-The first side will show your understanding of the Grievances listed in the Declaration of Independence. On page 154 in the SS Book, the "List of Grievances" section begins. This is where Thomas Jefferson lists all of the problems that the colonies had with England/King George (the "He")
-The second side will show your understanding of a major event from the war
SIDE ONE OF POSTER
STEP 1
-Read through them and pick THREE individual grievances to put into your own words: re-write them into a sentence/phrase that a middle school student would understand on a piece of paper/your notebook
STEP 2
-Create a recruitment poster for the Continental Army. It should have a large title at the top asking/pleading/demanding that people join the army. Then have a picture that grabs their attention. Also, on that side of the poster write the THREE THINGS you translated as reasons for people to join (you're trying to inspire them to join because of the terrible things England/King George are doing)
SIDE TWO OF POSTER
STEP 1
-Go through chapter 6/your notes from chapter 6 and find something interesting from the war (a battle we won or lost, something else interesting that might inspire people to help the war effort or even join the Army/Quasi Navy)
STEP 2
-Create an engaging title for your poster, draw something that will inspire people, explain in a few short phrases what is going on and why Americans/Patriots should care. Again, you're trying to inspire Americans to do something (whatever you decide) to help the war effort
BOTH OF THESE ARE DESIGNED TO BE LIKE PROPAGANDA AND INSPIRE SOMEONE IN 1777-1781 TO HELP AMERICA BY DOING SOMETHING OR JOINING THE MILITARY

AVID - College Research and Presentation
Spend some time answering the following questions about 3 universities you think you'd be interested in attending.
1. High School GPA requirement
2. SAT/ACT Score requirement
3. Average teacher-student ratio
4. Public vs. Private School?
5. In state or out-of-state tuition?
6. Cost of tuition per semester/year
7. What is the school most famous or well-known for academically?
8. What is the school's reputation overall?
9. Any other additional or interesting information
THESE ARE A GUIDELINE FOR YOUR RESEARCH, YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE EVERY NUMBER YOU FIND - BUT WE WANT A FAIRLY COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW OF YOUR CHOSEN UNIVERSITIES.
After you have this information, you will put it together in a presentation. However, this shouldn't be a boring presentation where you just read off a bunch of information, you can combine some of this information in ways that make it more intriguing. Perhaps you'll start with some slides showing your three picks and then explain some interesting things about those universities. Then you can explain where it is, why you want to attend that school and how difficult it is to get in to these. You can find an interesting way to show this information.
Overall, the idea is for you to organize this information in a way that will be interesting for us to watch and listen to as your audience - not just up there reading bland facts.
